Pookkottumpadam (Malappuram): The forest department arrested five more persons for hunting down a heavily pregnant wild buffalo. One person was arrested and remanded in connection with the case the other day.
The accused were identified as Puncha natives Pullara Abu aka Nanippa (47), Muhammed Busthan (30), Muhammed Ansif (23), Ashiq (27) and Suhail (28). They were arrested on Monday night. Puncha native Suresh Babu was arrested on Sunday.
The forest officers found buffalo meat from the house Pullara Abu during a raid held at night on August 10. They hunted the wild buffalo from Puncha forest in Chakkikuzhi forest station limits under Kalikavu range of Nilambur south forest division.
The forest officials seized about 25 kilograms of meat. It is assumed that there was about 200 kilograms of meat in total. The accused abandoned two skulls and other remains in different parts of the forest. Later, the accused revealed some of them to the probe team.
The accused will be produced before the court on Wednesday. Investigation is progressing to know if more people were involved in the crime. The investigation was led by Kalikavu range officer P. Suresh and Chakkikuzhi deputy range officer K. Sakeer Husain.
