In an unfortunate road accident, 16 personnel of the Indian Army lost their lives at Zema in North Sikkim. The deceased army personnel include 3 JCOs and 13 Jawans.
The accident, which claimed the lives of 16 personnel and left 4 injured, reportedly involved an army truck which was a part of a 3-vehicle convoy.
The Indian Army convoy had left from Chatten in the morning and was moving towards Thangu en route Zema. As per reports, the truck skidded down a steep slope while driving through a sharp turn. A rescue operation was immediately launched wherein the 4 injured personnel were air evacuated.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed grief over the fatal accident through a tweet.
“Anguished to learn about the loss of lives of brave soldiers of the Indian Army in a road accident in Sikkim. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” said the President.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed grief over the loss of lives due to the accident through a tweet. He said, “Deeply pained by the loss of lives of the Indian Army personnel due to a road accident in North Sikkim.”
“The nation is deeply grateful for their service and commitment. My condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for the speedy recovery of those who are injured,” the Defence Minister further added.
Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt also expressed remorse over the deceased and wished for a speedy recovery of the injured Indian Army personnel.
“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives of Indian Army soldiers in a road accident in North Sikkim. The nation is deeply grateful for their service and commitment,” said the MoS in a tweet.
