100 food street to come up in 100 districts: Central Government

In a major announcement for food lovers, the Union Health Ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, has requested states/UTs to develop 100 food streets in 100 districts across the country. This innovative move is aimed at encouraging safe and healthy food practices among food businesses and community members. Also, this can be an instrumental step in reducing foodborne illness and improving overall health outcomes.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed that the initiative is being taken up as a pilot project to create an example for other such streets to come up across the country for ensuring hygienic and safe food practices.

Financial assistance of Rs. 1 crore per Food Street to states/UTs

Under this unique initiative, States/UTs will receive financial assistance of Rs. 1 crore per food street/district to fill up critical gaps. The Ministry of Health says that 100 such food streets will be opened up in 100 districts across the country. In addition, this assistance will be provided under the National Health Mission (NHM) in the ratio of 60:40 or 90:10, with the condition that standard branding of these food streets will be done as per FSSAI guidelines. The initiative will be implemented through the National Health Mission (NHM) in convergence with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and with technical support from FSSAI.

Indians and their love for street food

India has a rich and diverse street food culture that is enjoyed by millions of people every day. The street food market in India has been growing rapidly in recent years, fueled by increasing urbanisation, changing lifestyles, and a growing middle class. Additionally, street foods have traditionally been an integral part of Indian society and are present all across the country.

Moreover, one of the reasons for the growth of the street food market in India is the increasing demand for convenience and quick service. As street foods are economical and affordable, they are widely popular among common citizens. The culture of street food also has the additional benefit of boosting employment in the country and promoting entrepreneurship. Moreover, the rise of social media has also contributed to the popularity of street food in India. Food bloggers and influencers regularly feature street food vendors on their platforms, creating buzz and attracting more customers.

However, there are also various challenges associated with the growing demand for street food in India. One of the most significant challenges is ensuring that the food is safe and hygienic, as street food is normally prepared in unstandardized conditions. While street food vendors can capitalise on the growing demand for their products, there is also a need for greater regulation and proper mechanisms to ensure that the food is safe and hygienic.
