“Yahan kuch nahi ho sakta” – The redundant phrase

Yahan kuch nahi ho sakta” – The redundant phrase, used when people have ZERO hopes on something good will ever happen

Since late 80s issue of corruption has been discussed in every living room, in trains amongst co passengers, in schools, colleges, as a favourite topic of debate, discussion. Is Corruption a bigger menace than terrorism or is corruption making the country hollow! We discussed every form of corruption endlessly, quoting examples, as if it was all pervading ; as to how money is being hoarded under beds, almirahs, how traders are avoiding sales tax, how inter state borders where excise people collect taxes are a big source of corruption, how hardly 2% population is paying taxes and rest generating black money, how builders are minting money and flouting rules, diverting money from one project to another and fooling the customers, how some having black money are buying BENAMI properties, how CAs are swindling money and how companies are appointing fake directors with fake addresses, how environment rules are used to harass businessmen and so on. At the end of the discussion we all used to unanimously declare; “Yaha kuch nahi ho sakta“.

We knew so much about corruption and its various forms but have we bothered to find out how much in last 4.5 years has happened to check every aspect of it! Many of us have not done that. Let me tell you.

One – Demonetisation brought every single penny hidden in closets into the bank. So, as a result, almost Rs 1.75 lakh crore deposited in banks post note-ban and more than 18 lakh people with disproportionate income are under scrutiny. There is no money hidden now. Isn’t that an achievement!

Two – It also helped identifying almost 16000 shell companies which CAs were using to park the ill gotten money of their clients. All these companies have been closed. And another 80000 are under scrutiny.

Three – Recent drive of KYC for Directors on Company Boards has revealed interesting facts. Nearly 2.1million individuals out of 3.3 million ‘active directors’ have failed to register their basic information under KYC requirement to be eligible for board positions in companies.
Appointing peons, drivers, on Board of directors to fool authorities will be checked. The move was aimed at weeding out fake names being listed as genuine directors. It was part of Government’s larger strategy to clamp down on shell companies that seek to operate outside regulatory boundaries.

Four – New tax payers has more than doubled to 56 lakhs from 28 lakhs last year.

Five – GST has changed it all. Now it’s difficult to evade tax. It has done away with the need of Tax chungis, a hub of corruption. Government has already reached a mark of 1 lakh crores earnings p/m through GST. It has made consumer items cheap and is one of the major factor for the vegetables being still comparatively cheap despite the hike of fuel prices. The total number of GSTR filed for the month of July up to August 31, 2018 is 67 lakhs.

Six – RERA( Real Estate Regulatory Authority) in many states has started functioning and builders have to get their projects registered. Yes there are teething problems but those are created by the States. As a result of this, Real estate corruption has received a solid jolt.

Seven – Government notified the Benami Property Act which was pending since 2012. Till now all that mattered to taxman was source of money. As long as the amount was declared in the tax return, no questions were asked. Law against ‘benami’ deals has radically altered that settled belief.

It’s a dramatic change that affluent India is yet to come to terms with. To many, the attachment of SRK’s Alibaug bungalow by Income-Tax authorities has come as a rude wake-up call. The action has sparked off fears and brought to the fore far reaching implication. Authorities have begun cracking down on benami assets and those who deposited large amounts of cash in aftermath of DeMo but haven’t yet filed returns as it intensifies the war against black money. IT department has already seized 541 properties, frozen accounts holding about 1,800 crores.

I haven’t quoted anything which has not been QUOTED either by RBI, NITI AAYOG or reputed newspapers. All this has happened in just 4years. Do the pathological haters understand the magnitude and collosssity of the task that has been undertaken in last 4.5 yrears?. All states concerns were addressed through GST Council, Bill passed in LS/RS despite all the opposition, States were cajoled to ratify the Bill, simultaneously Software prepared, tested, companies registered and Bill finally executed in a country like India.

We all had been cribbing and compalining about the system all these years calling it inefficient, blaming lethargic Babus. But still things have happened. It’s time to once again quote Mr Modi from his answer that he gave when he received the award of best CM. It was during INDIA TODAY LEADERSHIP CONCLAVE. He had said ;
Bahut kuch Kiya jaa sakta hai. Wohi Babu, wohi Files, wahi Kanoon, phir bhi Gujarat mey kaam hua aur logon ko bolna pada ki Gujarat ka system saaf hai“.

In my opinion Honourable PM Narendra Modi has done a colossal task. And if you can not appreciate it then i am sorry to say you must be one of those whose Rozi-Roti (bread-butter) has been hit severely by these measures
