World Tourism Day 2020: History, significance and theme

World Tourism Day 2020

World Tourism Day is commemorated each year on the 27th of September. The industry benefits entire families and communities, and women’s lives are intrinsically linked to this sector.

Data from the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) shows that 100 to 120 million direct tourism jobs are at risk. The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) forecasts a loss of 1.5 to 2.8 per cent of global GDP. Check the last Secretary General’s policy brief about the impact of the pandemic on tourism and the roadmap towards a more sustainable and inclusive tourism sector.

“Tourism helps rural communities hold onto their unique natural and cultural heritage, supporting conservation projects, including those safeguarding endangered species, lost traditions or flavours,” says Zurab Pololikashvili, the UNWTO Secretary-General.

Significance and Theme for 2020 on World Tourism Day:
The 2020 edition of World Tourism Day, with the theme of “Tourism and Rural Development”, will celebrate the unique role that tourism plays in providing opportunities outside of big cities and preserving cultural and natural heritage all around the world.

The United Nations is aware that tourism has been among the hardest hit of all sectors by the COVID-19 pandemic. No country has been unaffected. Restrictions on travel and a sudden drop in consumer demand have led to an unprecedented fall in international tourism numbers, which in turn have led to economic loss and the loss of jobs.

Women, youth, and workers in the informal economy are the most at risk from tourism sector job losses and business closures due to the pandemic. At the same time, the destinations most reliant on tourism for jobs and economic growth are likely to be the hardest hit.

History and significance of World Tourism Day:
Since 1980, the United Nations World Tourism Organization has celebrated World Tourism Day as international observances on September 27. This date was chosen as on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted. The adoption of these Statutes is considered a milestone in global tourism.

Tourism sector in India: The coronavirus pandemic has dealt a crippling blow to the Indian travel and tourism industry and the entire value chain linked to the sector is likely to lose around Rs 5 lakh crore or USD 65.57 billion, according to a study by industry chamber CII and hospitality consulting firm Hotelivate.

The organised sector alone is likely to lose USD 25 billion. The figures are quite alarming and the industry needs immediate measures for survival, according to the CII-Hotelivate report.

“This is one of the worst crises ever to hit the Indian tourism industry impacting all its geographical segments – inbound, outbound and domestic, almost all tourism verticals – leisure, adventure, heritage, MICE, cruise, corporate and niche segments,” it said.

Trained professionals in the Tourism Sector:
Job searches for roles in the hospitality and tourism sector have been on the rise since May, coinciding with the easing of lockdown measures across the country, says a report. Searches by job seekers saw a 30 per cent increase between May and August 2020, according to a report by global job site Indeed.

With 40 million jobs at stake and 15 Lakh Cr losses to the hospitality industry. Govt is setting its bets on reviving the tourism industry. The tourism task force has been set up by the Modi Govt to revive the sector, and a high-level inter-ministerial meeting has been scheduled on this very subject. On top of the agenda, Govt plans to promote pilgrimage sites and Buddhist circuit with better air connectivity under Udan. Govt also plans to promote Ladakh as a key tourism hotspot with direct flights from Bangalore, Ahmedabad, and other parts from North India.
