Weather Updates: Dense fog in capital & cold wave alert for 5 days, rain possible at many places


Dense fog along with pollution in the capital Delhi has increased the problems of the people. The capital was seen wrapped in a blanket of thick fog on Tuesday morning also. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for fog and drop in temperature for the next five days in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana.

The minimum temperature in the capital was recorded at 7 degrees on Tuesday, while the maximum temperature is expected to be around 22 degrees. The average level of Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 414, which falls in the severe category.

Visibility was recorded less than 100 meters in the capital NCR on Tuesday. According to the report released by the Meteorological Department, Palam had 25 meters of visibility in the morning, while Safdarjung had 50 meters of visibility. Visibility on the highway was very low.

According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of rain at many places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Tuesday. There is a possibility of rain with thunder in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha and Maharashtra. The weather will be normal in the rest of the country. At the same time, there is a possibility of dense fog in North India for the next five days.

The Meteorological department has warned that dense to very dense fog conditions are likely to continue over Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and Uttar Pradesh during next 4-5 days. Moreover, cold wave conditions are also likely to continue over Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and north Rajasthan during next 5 days.

Due to moisture and light winds at lower tropospheric levels over Indo-Gangetic plains, dense to very dense fog in many or some pockets are very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh in night or in the morning hours during next 3 days and dense fog in isolated pockets for subsequent 02 days.

Similarly, dense fog in isolated pockets is also very likely over Bihar and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim during next 2 days. No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely over northern parts of India during next 4-5 days. No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely over Gujarat state during next 3 days and fall by 2-3°C thereafter. Due to dry north/northwesterly winds from Himalayas, cold wave conditions likely to continue in isolated pockets very likely over Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and north Rajasthan during next 4-5 days.

Low pressure area over central parts of South Bay of Bengal and adjoining East Equatorial Indian Ocean is likely to be there. Similarly, a Low Pressure Area lies over central parts of South Bay of Bengal & adjoining East Equatorial Indian Ocean. It is likely to move west-northwestwards slowly towards Sri-Lanka coast during next 2 days.
