Vinesh Phogat wins bronze in World Wrestling Championships in Serbia

Vinesh Phogat has become the first Indian woman wrestler to win two medals at the World Championships after clinching a bronze in 53 kilogram category in Belgrade, Serbia yesterday, September 14.

The Commonwealth Games 2022 gold medalist defeated reigning European champion Emma Malmgren of Sweden. It was a remarkable comeback for three-time CWG gold-medalist Vinesh after her shock qualification round defeat as she beat Swedish opponent Malmgren 8-0 in the bronze medal round.

Vinesh had made it to the bronze play-off through the repechage round after losing to Khulan Batkhuyag of Mongolia, in her first bout on Tuesday, September 13.

This is her second bronze medal at the Championships. She had previously earned a podium position in the 2019 edition of the tournament at Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.

India’s Under-23 bronze medalist Nisha Dahiya will also fight for bronze in the women’s 68 kilogram category while CWG 2022 gold medalist Naveen Malik will be in action today.
