Tiger population rising in Maharashtra; current count at 312.


In a positive development, the tiger population in Maharashtra is rising and currently there are 312 tigers in the state. Chandrapur leads in the tiger population in the state. However, the incidents of man-animal conflict have also increased in the past few days. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray reviewed the works of forest department has made certain vital suggestions.
 
The Chief Minister has asked the concerned officials to submit the proposal for rehabilitation of two villages near the Tadoba-Andhari tiger reserve immediately. AIR correspondent reports that the Chief Minister’s suggestions for rehabilitation of these villages assume significance as he noted that in the days to come the tiger population will increase further. He opined that with the rise in the tiger’s population the man-animal conflict may increase which at best should be avoided. 
 
The villages near the tiger reserve should be rehabilitated as per the needs of the villagers. He also instructed that, the villagers should be compensated in cash. He urged forest department officials to build protection walls around the wells as there have been many incidences of tigers succumbing to their injuries after falling into these wells. State environment minister Aditya Thackeray also suggested to expand the Tadoba tiger reserve area.
