Striking doctors in West Bengal to hold talks with CM today

Agitating doctors in West Bengal will meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today. The meeting will take place at the state secretariat Nabanna in Kolkata at 3 PM to end the week-long standoff between doctors and the state government.

West Bengal doctors are on strike for a week after two of their colleagues were attacked and seriously injured by relatives of a patient at the NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a nationwide strike today to express solidarity with the agitating doctors. According to IMA, 3.5 lakh doctors are expected to participate in the strike which is likely to affect non-essential health services across the country today.

It said, all non-essential services including OPDs have been withdrawn for 24 hours from 6 AM today, while emergency and causality services will continue to function. IMA, the apex body of doctors in the country, has also renewed its demand for a central law to check violence against health care workers in hospitals.
