Sri Lankan court releases seven Indian fishermen

A Sri Lankan court today released seven Indian fishermen, who were detained by the country’s Navy personnel on the 13th of this month.

They hail from Tankachimadam (तनकच्छी मडम) in Ramanadhapuram district, Tamil Nadu. The fishermen were arrested on charges of poaching while fishing near Delft Island. The court at Oorkaavalthurai (वूरकावलतुरई) has warned them not to repeat the offence of crossing the international maritime boundary. The owner of the boat has been directed to appear before the court on the 29th of this month, failing which, it has warned that the boat will be nationalized. It is expected that the released fishermen would reach back home next week.
