Social media sites are intermediaries within context of IT Act: Govt

Centre is in a process of notifying Information Technology (Intermediaries Guidelines) Amendment Rules, 2018 which will cover Social media sites in the country and it is likely to be notified by 15th January 2020.

This was stated in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today by the Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

The Minister said, social media sites are intermediaries within the context of the Information Technology Act, 2000. He said, in last month, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court.
