amsung has applied for the trademark Space Zoom with the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office). The is speculated to be the name of Samsung’s lossless zoom technology that could be seen on the upcoming Galaxy S11. The Galaxy S11 is expected to launch in February with flagship features including some major upgrades to the camera.
Space Zoom suggests Samsung is working on bringing lossless zoom to the Galaxy S11. There have been rumours lately that Samsung is referring to the camera on the Galaxy S11 as Hubble and that the flagship will offer 5x optical zoom using a periscope camera.
When it comes to the cameras, Samsung has been playing it safe with its flagship phones. The company has so far offered 2x zoom support during a time when brands like Huawei are offering 50x zoom capabilities. The 5x optical zoom will be a good upgrade over the Galaxy S10, but Samsung may not stop there.
There have also been reports that the Galaxy S11 will have a 108MP main camera. Samsung will use the 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor that the company co-developed with Xiaomi. The high megapixel sensor and lossless zoom feature suggest Samsung is looking to make some big upgrades to the camera in order to take on the competition.
Apple, Google and Huawei have been focusing a lot on improving the cameras on their flagships through hardware and computational photography. Google’s Pixel 4 comes with an astrophotography feature while Apple has introduced an impressive Night Mode feature on the iPhone 11. Samsung knows it needs to catch up with the times, so you can expect some interesting features with the Galaxy S11, 5x optical zoom being one of them.
