Renowned fashion designer Sharbari Datta (63) was found dead inside a bathroom at her residence in South Kolkata’s Broad Street at around 12:25 am on Friday. Her post-mortem examination will be conducted today.
After receiving information, officials of the Kolkata Police headquarters Lalbazar’s homicide branch and local police station reached the spot. As per the preliminary investigation, it appears that she died of a sudden cardiac arrest. However, her family members said that she was not suffering any chronic ailments.

The news of her demise shocked showbiz fraternity and her fans. Singers Parama Banerjee and Ujjaini Mukherjee, actors Srabonty Chatterjee, Rukmini Maitra and Pujarini Ghosh, theatre personality-director Debesh Chatterjee expressed grief and shock on social media. “Sharbari di.. I don’t know what to say. I am too shocked to even react to this.. Forever Immortal in the History of Fashion!,” said one of the tweets.
Sharbari Datta- a popular name in fashion industry
Daughter of Bengali poet Ajit Datta, Sharbari Datta graduated from Presidency College and got her master’s degree from Calcutta University. In her student days, she participated in a number to dance dramas. Later, she went on to become a popular name in the fashion industry, especially in the field of men’s ethnic wears. She had introduced coloured Bengali Dhotis and designer Punjabi kurtas with embroidery to the mainstream fashion world.
She dressed several celebrities including Sachin Tendulkar, and many more as she changed men’s fashion in a great way with her ethnic fusion designs.
To break notions about machismo, she stepped into male accessory designing. Her range of exquisite jewellery for men was showcased in a World Gold Council-sponsored show. Recently, she had also launched a range of diamond accessories for men.
