Protests: the blames! the benefits!

It is described as the ‘decade of protests’. Newspapers, news channels, news analysts and news reporters are of unanimous view that it indeed has been so almost all over the world; more so in India.

We do admit that to oppose or protest is a democratic right and that it should not be curtailed or forfeited.  But do these protests serve any purpose? Whom do these protests benefit?

We see processions – duly permitted by the concerned authorities and a few unauthorized ones too; we see ‘Dharna’s, blockades at the gates of certain offices or around certain authorities; we see token fasts to fasts unto death; and of course, we witness violent protests that nobody- at least on paper – supports or encourages – yet they take place!

The demands might be different; the powers being fought against might be different too. But in most of the cases the ‘protestors’ are largely the same. This is true all over the world. As we have sportsmen, as there are workers and employees, we have a ‘special’ segment of people who readily and happily come forward to oppose and protest.

Am I being unjust? Does it sound skeptical? Do I try to attach a bad identity? Not at all. It is a statement of fact and nothing else.

In any society, only a select few come to the street and fight while most others, a vast majority, prefer to stay away from ‘action’ even in times of crisis or calamity.

To protest against the establishment calls for enormous amount of courage and resilience and many people do not have these noble qualities in them. (may I say – in us?) This is precisely the reason why we find the very same people coming out in the open and defy the orders and protest and court arrest. These are in a way the civil soldiers who fight against every injustice and for the overall good of the society.

These warriors do not have any hidden agenda. They are committed to working for the common cause. They sacrifice many things in their personal lives yet carry on with their plans with the same vigor and spirit whenever they emerge. Sadly, they are branded ‘anti-socials’ and they are the ones arrested and attacked by the brutal forces of the ‘authorities’. Have we ever thought of the hardships that these public spirited elements go through for the good of us all? Let us salute them all for their selfless fight.

Are the protests being carried out only by these warriors? It is not. There might be a small part played by these elements but there are quite a lot of ‘others’ who easily outnumber the genuine fighters. The so called ‘activists’, the ‘leaders’ who are hand in hand with all the vested interests enter and make the scene confused, complicated and.. chaotic. These are the ones who ‘steal’ the show and operate the whole ‘event’. For them, yes, it is an ‘event management’ as designed by certain forces outside the ambit of the ‘demands’ and grievances.

The challenge now before the ‘authorities’ is to differentiate and separate the genuine civil fighters from the trouble mongers perpetrated by well oiled, well orchestrated vested interest groups. The pity is that many of the honest fighters unknowingly fall prey to the evil designs of the trouble mongers who normally operate in the guise of good Samaritans. This is the situation all over the world. This is a universal phenomenon.

While nobody can ever endorse the oppressive and unacceptable moves of the government, the options before the aggrieved public are not many. There has not been an effective mechanism anywhere in the world that instantly answers the voice of the people and assuages the hurt feelings or sentiments of the public at large. If there could be a system in place that would address the issues then and there with a good intent, the Human race would have been in a far better, much healthier state of living. Sadly, no leader of national / international standing is ready to think in terms of creating one such ‘facility’.

The men in Power have not been clean too. In fact they have been as dishonest as the vested interests. The authorities have been more brutal and more aggressive than the protesters.

Many times, in many parts of world, it is the governments that ‘create’ an issue and fuel it with more and more untenable, unacceptable ‘follow up action’.

We do not have leaders who believe in and committed to democratic principles in public governance anymore. They behave like petty politicians aiming to stay in power, stay in the news and stay confined to their own desires and aspirations.

‘Public interest’ would not allow many of the actions of these leaders or men in power.  Any move of a government that is opposed by the people must be reconsidered and withdrawn as it should be the people who must have the ultimate authority in deciding what they want and what they do not.

Anything that is declared mandatory, forcing and binding on the people MUST necessarily have the approval of the people being governed. Their disagreement has to be respected and the declaration must at least be kept in abeyance, in suspended animation till the time the people are ready to accept it.

‘People would not understand’, ‘this would take time for the people to feel the good in it’ ‘sometimes, we have to take hard decisions’ are some of the arguments that merit no serious consideration. To think that people would not understand governance is the most insulting comment on the ones who voted the leaders to power. At no point of time, can the rulers, in any government in any country, be more prudent and more positive than the people.

The problem of effectively dealing with the protests starts from the indifferent attitude of the authorities in charge. The first and immediate reaction of the governments all over the world is to ‘somehow’ crush, scuttle and discredit the mass uprising and protests.

It all begins with the set pattern of defacing the protesters with ‘anti-social’, ‘anti-national’ tags; trying to divide them on the lines of region, religion, caste, language or political leanings. If by the turn of events, any particular section of the society is more openly defiant, it becomes easier for the governments to call the agitators ‘partisan’, ‘sectarian’, with all such names.

It should be understood that it is the prime responsibility of the governments to show more restraint than the protesters; to act more sensibly than the masses. When anger and displeasure run high, the agitating public are bound to behave in an irrational way; they are more likely to indulge in undemocratic activities. Such incidents should not be construed as violent reactions; they are but spontaneous outbursts that would vanish automatically when the people believe that required corrective measures are taken against the unjust development.

In any case, protests are not good or bad indicators. They are supposed to be temporary; shorter their duration better it would be for the people.

Let us not forget the basic fact that unless a ‘seed’ is sown, there would not be a plant or a tree. Who sows it? Make no mistake, most often it is done by the governments; again, for narrow political gains. This is the case all over the world and so it is a global issue.

It would be good if the great leaders abstain themselves from being ambitious and aristocratic.

Let us wish the New Year would bring more sanity among the leaders and more civility among the civilians!

Baskaran Krishnamurthy.
