The present capacity of Indian oil companies is self sufficient and they are also fully prepared to meet the future demand of petrol, diesel and other petroleum products. Informing this to Lok Sabha, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said country’s refining capacity of 249.2 MMT per annum is adequate to meet the present demand of major petroleum products to the tune of 214 MMT.
The Minister said, his ministry has formulated several policies and taken several actions during the past few years to further increase the production of oil. Mr Puri said all refineries have been categorized as vital locations by Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Home Ministry. The Minister said accordingly adequate steps are taken to protect these vital installations against circumstances like war, natural calamity and terrorist threat.
