Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tokyo today morning to attend the funeral of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. PM Modi held a bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida before attending Abe’s State Funeral.
The Prime Minister conveyed his deepest condolences on the demise of the late Shinzo Abe. He noted the contributions of Shinzo Abe in strengthening the India-Japan partnership as well as in conceptualizing the vision of a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. “I’ve faith that under your leadership, India-Japan relations will deepen and scale new heights and we will be able to play an appropriate role in solving the problems of the world,” PM Modi said during the meeting.
The two leaders had a fruitful discussion on how to further strengthen the existing India-Japan bilateral relations. They also talked about a variety of regional and global topics. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to continue deepening the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, as well as cooperating in the region and in various international organisations and groups.
During his visit, the Prime Minister attended the state funeral ceremony at Budokan, followed by a welcoming ceremony at Tokyo’s Akasaka palace. According to a press release from the MEA, officials from over a hundred nations, including more than 20 Heads of State and Government, and over 700 foreign delegations attended the funeral. During this tour, he will also meet Mrs. Akie Abe.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit will be an occasion for him to pay tribute to former Prime Minister Abe, whom he regarded a dear friend and a strong proponent of the India-Japan friendship.
