Pink ball Test: Kohli, Rahane go past Tendulkar, Ganguly with solid 4th-wicket stand

India skipper Virat Kohli and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane now hold the record of adding the second-highest number of runs for the fourth wicket-partnerships in Test cricket. The two prolific batsmen achieved the feat as India continued to dominate proceeding on Day 2 of the Pink ball Test against Bangladesh at Eden Gardens, Saturday.

While batting together for the 4th wicket, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane have added 2763 runs in 42 innings at 69.07. Only Pakistan batsmen Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan have added more runs (3138 in 51 innings) for the same stand.

On the course, the Indian pair also surpassed the duo of former India batsman Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, who had 2695 runs in 44 innings.

On Day 2 of the 2nd Test against Bangladesh, Kohli and Rahane fell just a run short of their century stand as the latter was done in by some extra bounce as he top-edged a Taijul Islam delivery to be holed out at point soon after scoring his 22nd Test fifty.

Though Kohli lost his partner in the 61st over of Indian innings, he went on to become India’s first centurion in Day/Night Test as he scored his 27th Test hundred. Kohli also became the first Indian skipper to go past the 5000-run mark in the longest format.

Meanwhile, with his 20th Test ton as a captain, Kohli also surpassed Ricky Ponting to grab 2nd place in the list of captains with the most Test hundreds. The swashbuckling batsman is now only behind former South Africa captain Graeme Smith, who has 25 centuries to his name.

India added 150 runs in 30 overs in the first session of Day 2 and went into Lunch with 289 for 4.
