No decision yet on Turkey sanctions over S-400 purchase

United States President Donald Trump said yesterday that his administration has not ruled out imposing sanctions on Turkey over its purchase of a Russian air defence system.

The remarks came a day after Trump Administration said that USA would not sell the F-35 fighter jets to Turkey after Ankara purchased the S-400 from sanctions-hit Russia.

Turkey, a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization received the first batch of the Russian missile defence system last Friday despite repeated warnings from Washington against the purchase.

The US has imposed a series of sanctions on Russian individuals, companies and government agencies over Moscow’s military intervention in Ukraine. Under current US laws, any country purchasing a major defence equipment from Russia could be subject to American sanctions.
