In the 7th edition of the Mumbai marathon, 22-year-old Ethiopian national,Derrara Hurisa has broken the event record for the full marathon elitecategory. Ayele Abshero and Birhanu Teshome came in second and third in thecategory.
Srinu Bugatha and Sudha Singh have won the Indian Elite Full Marathon Men’s andWomen’s category respectively.
Ethiopia’s Amane Beriso finished at the top in the International Elite FullMarathon Women’s category.
In the half marathon category, Uttar Pradesh’s Parul Choudhary has emergedvictorious while Mumbai’s Aarti Patil comes in second and Nasik’s Monicasecured the third spot.
Earlier, 55 thousand runners including foreign nationals have participated inthe Marathon which began amidst chilly morning today.
Runners took part in different categories of runs – from the full marathon,half marathon, the 10k run, the Mumbai Elite run among others. The halfmarathon started from the Bandra Worli Sealink while all the other runs startedfrom CST.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has flagged off Dream Run, a 5.9kilometres race and a non-timed fun run while state Cabinet Minister AadityaThackeray has flagged off the half marathon.
The half marathon began at 5.15 am and the 10k run started from ChhatrapatiShivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST) station in Mumbai, and runners ran through thecity, touching Bandra-Worli sealink, Marine drive, Mahalaxmi Race Course, HajiAli and Peddar road on their way.
Minister of State of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju andsenior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal among other dignitaries including filmcelebrities were present to cheer the runners.
Meanwhile, a 64-year-old Mumbai resident who participated in the marathon dieddue to cardiac arrest. Four other participants also complained of cardiacarrest and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
