Mumbai court extends ED custody of Maharashtra’s Minister Nawab Malik till March 7

A special court in Mumbai’ has extended the ED custody of Maharashtra’s Minorities Affairs Minister Nawab Malik till 7th March in a money-laundering probe linked to the activities of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim and his aides.

Malik was arrested on 23rd February after being questioned for about five hours at the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) office in south Mumbai.

Appearing on ED’s behalf, Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh informed the court that 3-4 days of the previous remand were lost as Mr. Malik had to be admitted to a hospital due to ill health. He further contended that more statements have come on record, requiring interrogation.

Observing that allegations against Mr. Malik were prima facie well-founded, Special Judge RN Rokade said that sufficient time would be required to investigate proceeds of crime which traversed over the last 20 years. The ED’s case is based on an FIR filed recently by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) against Dawood Ibrahim and others. The NIA had filed its criminal complaint under sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
