Meet the Champion’ Programme: Inspiring School Children across India

Every school-going child wishes to meet and interact with athletes like Neeraj Chopra, Bajrang Punia, Ravi Dahiya, Sharad Kumar, Devendra Jhajharia, Yogesh Kathuniya and several others, who have brought laurels to the nation. Imagine the joy a child will have, when he or she meets their role model in person, as real-life experiences are far better than virtual experiences. Seeing Neeraj Chopra on TV is nowhere near in comparison to interacting with the same individual in real life.

This far-flung dream of millions of school-going children is turning into reality through the ‘Meet The Champion’ Programme. PM Modi’s unique school visit campaign ahead, ‘Meet the champion Programme’ aims to prepare and connect the young school students with the champions. The aim is to acknowledge and ready them with champion qualities to face the world in any sphere of life.

Meet The Champion Programme: A unique step

The PM Modi visioned program is unique and inspiring towards nation-building. During the meeting with Tokyo Olympic heroes at his residence on 16 August, PM Modi asked the athletes to visit 75 schools to meet and inspire students. The Ministry of education and Sports Authority of India are working together to run this mega plan as a ‘Meet the Champions’ programme over the next two years.

The visits started in January 2022. As of now several Olympics and Paralympics athletes like Bajrang Punia, Sharad Kumar, Devendra Jhajharia, Mariyappan Thangavelu and others have visited cities across India

According to available data, around 75 athletes will be interacting with 75 schools pan-India over two years and spend an hour with the school students during each visit. The athletes will talk about the importance of santulit aahar (balanced diet), fitness and sports at a young age. These visits by Olympians will give school students an insight into their lives and what drives them to excel in their fields and explore. The talks will inspire school children. Olympic Gold medallist Neeraj Chopra started off the ambitious ‘Meet the Champions’ programme that connects India’s ace athletes with school children when he interacted with students from over 75 schools at Sanskardham, Ahmedabad. Neeraj gave tips to students about the importance of a balanced diet, fitness and sport in one’s life. He also shared interesting anecdotes about his career with the students.

Tokyo Olympics Bronze Medallist Bajrang Punia visited Haryana’s Aarohi Model School in Panipat – 23 Dec 2021

The Olympic bronze medallist appreciated the idea of ‘Meet The Champion Programme’ and enthralled the students at Haryana’s Aarohi Model School in Panipat. While interacting, Bajrang said, “I am very happy that I have come to this school, it reminds me of my school days because even I come from a village in Haryana and coming back here is like coming back to school.”

Paralympics bronze medallist Sharad Kumar met students at Cotton Hill Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Trivandrum, Kerala – 06 Jan 2022

Sharad Kumar received a warm reception from the students and staff of the school. The star para-athlete was seen playing table tennis with the students and inspired them with motivating words.

Paralympic Gold and Silver medallist Mariyappan Thangavelu visited Salem’s Holy Angles Girls’ Matric. Hr. Sec. School – 24 Feb 2021

Mariyappan Thangavelu interacted with the students of more than 75 schools during his visit to Salem’s Holy Angles Girls’ Matric. Hr. Sec. School. The athlete explained the importance of sports and a healthy lifestyle in a student’s life and stressed the importance of having a well-balanced diet
