A Russian sports instructor has set a new Guinness World Record by bench pressing a 50-kg barbell 76 times underwater before returning to the surface for air.
Vitaly Vivchar, a native of Tomsk in Siberia, bench pressed 76 times underwater to beat Greg Wittstock’s record by 15 repetitions. Impressively, he held his breath for more than 3 minutes during the attempt.
Vivchar said he was motivated to break the record after learning about Whittstock, who had completed 62 reps in 2019.
Before attempting the record at Lebyazhye lake, Vivchar trained hard for two months.

“I came across the official Guinness world record a couple of years ago after seeing a man lifting a barbell underwater. Then I thought that I had enough skills to do that myself. I have experience of winning bench press competitions, I won the European Russian-style bench press tournament. And I’m an amateur freediver. So I applied to set a new record,” Vivchar said.
Vivchar, an amateur diver, has won several bench press competitions. However, he was worried about the world record attempt due to the condition of the water and bad weather.
He admitted that the difficult conditions were proving to be overwhelming before the attempt.
“I was really anxious because the water became cold and muddy due to the bad weather. Moreover, I was really nervous before my performance. My pulse rate was more than 108 beats per minute! It took me a long time to calm down,” he added.
