Maharashtra CM assures, govt making efforts to declare Sevagram Ashram as a ‘World Heritage Site’

In Maharashtra, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray today said,  Sevagram Ashram in Wardha is the place where Mahatma Gandhi stayed for a long time  and this Ashram emerged as a centre of freedom or a place of energy.  Sevagram, which means ‘Village of service’, was the place of Gandhiji’s residence where he nurtured his thoughts on self-reliant Indian villages.

The Chief Minister assured that the Mahavikas Aghadi government is making efforts to declare Sevagram Ashram as a ‘World Heritage Site’ in order to make the international tourists visiting  ashram aware of its importance. He was speaking at the e-inauguration of completed works under ‘Sevagram Development Plan’  to celebrate the 151st birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi today.

Under the Sevagram Development Plan, a well-equipped Charkha House with a capacity of one thousand seats is being constructed on Wardha-Sevagram road. An 18.5 feet high Charkha has also been constructed in the vicinity of this Charkha House.  Charkha Museum has also been set up here to make the tourists aware of the importance of Charkha.

A 31 feet high statue of Mahatma Gandhi and 19 feet high statue of Vinoba Bhave made from scrap material by students of Mumbai based J.J. School of Art has also been established in Charkha House premises. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said the state government is committed to pass on the legacy of Gandhian thought to the new generation. 

The Sevagram Development Plan includes state-of-the-art facilities like Sevagram Ashram Guest House, beautification of sculptures depicting historical events in the squares of Wardha city, beautification of Dham river near Pawanar Ashram sanctified by the stay of Acharya Vinoba Bhave.

Wardha’s Guardian Minister Sunil Kedar informed that a week long program starting  from today  will be organised in Sevagram Ashram.

Wardha based Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University will hold Deepotasva in the evening which is slated to be inaugurated by Governor of Maharashtra B.S.Koshyari and Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishr via Video Conferencing.
