Maharashtra CM advises people to avoid festival celebrations in view of possible third wave of Covid19

One of the leading festivals of Maharashtra Dahi Handi is celebrated with much enthusiasm and fervor on the next day of Krishna Janmashtami. However, this year in view of a possible third wave of Covid 19, Maharashtra govt. has advised against celebrating Dahi Handi festival today.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray asked people to avoid the traditional Dahi Handi ritual and urged people to organise welfare activities and social programs instead. However, political parties have opposed the decision of the state govt.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray advised people to avoid festival celebrations to overcome the corona pandemic and said all the Covid 19 guidelines are enforced to save the lives of citizens from pandemic. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said the second wave of corona is yet to be over in the state; besides, the Delta variant is spreading speedily and many experts have alerted the possibility of a third wave. He said keeping all this in mind, people from all religions should cooperate with the government and celebrate festivals in a simple manner. It may be recalled that the Union govt in a letter to state three days ago had also advised to impose restrictions for festivals. However, political parties are opposing the decision.

BJP state president Chandrakant Patil asked government to allow celebrations following Covid19 protocols. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has strongly opposed the decision and staged protests at Thane and Nashik districts yesterday. Few leaders of the party have said they would go ahead with the celebrations following which security has been stepped up in some areas. Thane Police has also registered FIR against MNS district president along with 15 workers.
