Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon passes away at 85

Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon died on Tuesday morning. He was 85. Tandon’s demise was announced by his son Ashutosh. 

According to Ashutosh Tandon’s tweet, his father breathed last at 5.35 am on Tuesday morning. Tandon was admitted to the Medanta Hospital in Lucknow on June 11 with breathing problems, difficulty in urination and fever.

His last rites would be performed at Gulalaghat crematorium at 4.30 pm. Ashutosh has called on the people to follow social distancing and pay their tributes to departed soul by praying at home.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences to Tandon’s family and said he will be remembered for his untiring efforts to serve society.

Union defence minister Rajnath Singh expressed his grief over the death of the veteran politician. He tweeted that Tandon was popular among karyakartas (workers) and was committed towards development.

He also added that Tandon’s dedication towards public service can be seen in the developmental work he had undertaken for the people of Lucknow and Uttar Pradesh.

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced three day-state mourning following Tandon’s death. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed his grief over Madhya Pradesh governor’s death.

In a press statement the chief minister termed him as a great leader who had immense love for Lucknow in his heart.

According to Medanta director Dr Rakesh Kapoor, Lalji Tandon was on ventilator following a minor surgery.

“Tandon was admitted at Medanta Hospital Lucknow on the morning of June 11 with problems in breathing, difficulty in urination and fever. He was kept under supervision of doctors,” said Dr Kapoor.

His Covid-19 sample was reported negative at the time of admission.

Doctors detected a problem in his liver during precautionary health tests for which he was further investigated through a CT guided procedure. Post procedure, he developed internal abdominal bleeding for which an emergency operation was performed.

After the operation, Tandon was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where his condition kept on deteriorating. He was under strict supervision of medical experts.

Tandon became minister in Kalyan Singh government in Uttar Pradesh and was later appointed urban development minister in the Mayawati regime of the BJP-BSP alliance.
