Lalbaug Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal was founded in 1934 and takes care of all the arrangement throughout the ten days. There is a story behind the celebration. In 1932, the market place at Peru Chawl was shut down and so the fishermen and vendors used to sit in the open place. They vowed to Ganesha for a permanent place of their market. With efforts and support of Shri. Kuwarji Jethabhai Shah, Dr. V. B. Korgaonkar, Shri. Ramchandra Tawate, Shri. Nakhawa Kokam Mama, Bhausaheb Shinde, Dr. U. A. Rao and the local residents, the landlord Rajabai Tayyabali agreed to give a plot for the market. As the wish of fishermen and vendors was fulfilled they installed the first Ganesha idol dressed in a fisherman look on September 12, 1934. Since then the idol became popular for fulfilling the wishes of devotees.
Ganesh Chaturthi began on September 13 and ends after 11-day celebrations on September 23.
