Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a two-day visit to West Bengal, on Sunday announced that the Kolkata Port Trust will be renamed after Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee.
Addressing the Sesquicetenary Celebration of Kolkata Port, PM Modi said that Dr. Mookerjee had set the stone for industrialization in India. Chittaranjan Locomotive Factory, Hindustan Aircraft Factory, Damodar Valley Corporation and several others saw active participation from him.
“I announce the renaming of the Kolkata Port Trust to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Port. He is a living legend who was a leader for development and fought on the forefront for the idea of One Nation, One Constitution,” he said.
PM Modi also paid respect to Baba Saheb Ambedkar and said that it was disappointing that his suggestions were not taken seriously.
The Prime Minister also took a jibe at Mamata Banerjee and her government and said that if they allows the Ayushman Bharat Yojana and PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, people in West Bengal will also get the benefits of these schemes.
“We’re working towards increasing the number of cruises from 150 to 1000. This growth will also help West Bengal. Every possible initiative is being taken for the development of West Bengal by the Central Govt,” PM Modi said.
He said that the Kolkata port has seen India earn its independence and has witnessed the country’s journey from Satyagraha to Swacchagraha.
“For the modernisation and development of this port, a lot of schemes have been inaugurated. For the education and empowerment of tribal girls, hostels and skill development centres have also been inaugurated,” he said.
“A little earlier, a post stamp has been made available to commemorate the 150th year of the Kolkata Port Trust. Rs 500 crores have also been given to ensure pension to the long-term employees and former employees of the Trust,” he added.
