Kannur: Kannur district is under the threat of community transmission of COVID-19 with the number of rising cases. And the proof for this is the recent 2 cases where prisoners with criminal background tested positive for corona.
An accused in a case who is from Cherupuzha surrendered before the court after absconding for one and a half months. He was tested positive for COVID in the jail after the prisoner was remanded by the court. Besides the magistrate, police officers and the court staff were advised to go under quarantine . The health officials are still in dilemma if the prisoner maintained contacts with anyone else.
Another accused involved in a criminal case in Kannapuram also tested positive and the policemen and other persons who came in contact with the accused were asked to undergo quarantine. 26 policemen were asked to remain in self isolation. As there was shortage of staff at the station, policemen from other stations were taken on duty here.
The jail staff too remained in quarantine. A special team has been formed to identify the source from where these persons contracted the disease also study how the health workers too were infected.
The district administration is worried in not being able to identify the source of the infected 6 persons of a family who tested positive. The housewife was first detected with the infection and she passed away on Monday night.
The health officials are trying to find out how the woman who had not visited anywhere and not been in contact with any infected persons was affected by COVID. It was only after 2 days, her husband tested positive. The husband works in a fish market in Thalassery. It is believed that the woman would have contracted the disease from her husband. 3 persons tested positive on Sunday and 3 others on Monday from the same house.
Another case is that of an Adivasi pregnant woman from Ayyankunnu panchayat who got infected when she was in hospital for delivery. The woman was undergoing treatment at the district hospital for over a week and later shifted to the Government Medical College hospital. She was tested positive for COVID from there.
It is still uncertain how she was infected. The hospital doctors and other staff have been quarantined putting the daily functioning of the hospital in jeopardy. The second COVID test of the woman was negative. The health officials have sent the first test results to the Virology Institute for further clarification.
