Jungle cat, barking deer in Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary for the first time

Jungle cat and barking deer have been spotted in Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary, Chandigarh for the first time. The sanctuary spreads over an area of 2,600 hectares and is home to a large number of animals including peacocks, sambar, Russell’s viper, Black drongo, and more.

About the finding

The presence of the jungle cat and the barking deer was confirmed by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun during a wildlife survey. This finding of the animal species in the region indicates a richer habitat in the protected areas.

In May 2021, the Department of Forests and Wildlife carried out a detailed wildlife survey in the sanctuary with technical assistance from the WII. The WII report said that despite being small in area, the sanctuary supported good biological diversity and has the potential to be considered as one of the important wildlife and biodiversity conservation areas.

In addition to the jungle cat and barking deer, leopard, golden jackal, Indian grey mongoose, chital, wild boar, nilgai, Hanuman langur, Indian pangolin, etc were also spotted during the survey.

About the animals

Barking deer or the Indian muntjac barking deer is among the smallest deer species. The omnivore’s calls sound like a bark, hence it got the name barking deer. The sound helps in frightening its predators. It is found in the tropical and subtropical deciduous forests, grasslands, savannas, and scrub forests, on the slopes of the Himalayas.

On the other hand, the Jungle cat is a medium-small cat and is considered the largest remaining species of the wild cat genus Felis. These are the most common small cats in India but are also found in Egypt, West and Central Asia, South Asia, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia. They inhabit savannas, tropical dry forests, and reedbeds along rivers and lakes and live in altitudes up to 2,500 metres but can be spotted in lowlands.
