Indore wins Swachh Survekshan Awards 2021

President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday, November 20, 2021, presented the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2021 organized by the Ministry of Housing Affairs in New Delhi.

Madhya Pradesh’s Indore for the record fifth time in a row bagged the country’s cleanest city title along with grabbing the first position in the Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge.

Under the Swachh Survekshan 2021, Surat in Gujarat and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh clinched the second and third spot respectively in the cleanest cities’ list followed by Hapur and Rajkot.

Whereas, Maharashtra’s Vita bagged the cleanest city title under the category- with a population of less than one lakh. Followed by Lonavala and Saswad both from Maharashtra with second and third positions respectively.

Launched as a part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Swachh Survekshan is an annual survey of cleanliness, hygiene, and sanitation in cities and towns across India. A total of 4,320 cities participated in the 2021 survey, making it the world’s largest urban cleanliness survey.

Addressing the event, President Ram Nath Kovind highlighted the contribution of sanitation workers during the pandemic.

“Government is committed to ensure that life of no sanitation worker is put at risk due to unsafe cleaning practices. Manual scavenging is a shameful practice. Eradication of this practice is not only the responsibility of the government but also of the society and citizens,” President Kovind said.

Varanasi- Cleanest Ganga Town; Chhattisgarh bags cleanest state title:

Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh bagged the first position in the cleanest Ganga town category followed by Kannauj. Whereas, mineral-rich Chhattisgarh for the third time in row won the country’s cleanest state title in the category of more than 100 Urban Local Bodies.

While, Jharkhand for the second consecutive year secured the first rank in the category of state with less than 100 urban local bodies followed by Haryana and Goa.

Ahmedabad Cantonment won the title of the country’s cleanest Cantonment:

Gujarat’s Ahmedabad cantonment has been adjudged as the cleanest cantonment in the country. Other Cantonments in the list include Meerut, Delhi, Lansdowne, Varanasi, Dehradun, Secunderabad, Pachmarhi.

The Ministry of Housing Affairs further informed that a total of 9 cities – Indore, Surat, New Delhi Municipal Council, Navi Mumbai, Ambikapur, Mysuru, Noida, Vijayawada, and Patan- have been certified as 5-star cities while 143 cities have been certified as 3 star.
