India to soon have its fastest Supercomputer, ‘AIRAWAT’ ranked 75th in world ranking




India will soon achieve another remarkable feat in the tech world. The country is going to acquire its fastest supercomputer worth rupees 900 crore. This supercomputer may start functioning by March next year. Informing about this stupendous development, Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of Earth Sciences, also apprised about the weather monitoring mechanism which comes with the highest resolution of probabilistic forecast.

In another remarkable feat, the AI Supercomputer ‘AIRAWAT’, installed at C-DAC, Pune has been ranked 75th in the world. It was declared so in the 61st edition of the Top 500 Global Supercomputing List at the International Supercomputing Conference in Germany. This stupendous success of India’s tech journey, has put India on top of AI Supercomputing nations worldwide. The system is installed under the National Program on AI by the Government of India.

Elucidating the development, the minister said that the supercomputer can improve forecasting from 12 to 6 kms. Compared to the Cray XC-40 supercomputer, ‘Mihir’ with a performance of 6.8 petaFLOPS is India’s fastest supercomputer at present. He informed that the new supercomputer will have nearly thrice the capability.

The minister said that the facilities at this world class centre will benefit all sectors and all sections of the society, adding that every individual is going to get the benefit directly from this institution.

It is worth-mentioning here that India’s weather forecasting capabilities are improving very fast. In recent years, the country has made significant advances in the application of Science & Technology. Now, India is extending weather forecasts capabilities to countries in the neighbourhood and beyond.

In the meantime, while talking of the AI Supercomputer ‘AIRAWAT’, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) Secretary Alkesh Sharma said that AI is the most promising technology in the digital age.

He also informed about India’s strong ecosystem and competitive advantage with regard to AI. According to him, this advantage is also due to India’s massive data availability, strong digital economy and skilled workforce.

It is noteworthy here that India has been working in the Applied AI with focus on Natural Language Processing, Image Procession, Pattern Recognition, Agriculture, Medical Imaging, Education, Health Care, Audio assistance, Robotics and developing solutions for the strategic sectors.

The secretary said, India will pursue AI technology to empower citizens and organisation to solve the most pressing problems of society and economy to make the world a better place.
