India sends 150 tonnes of medical oxygen aid to Sri Lanka

Continuing its role as the first responder at a time of exigency to the friendly nations, India has delivered about 150 tonnes of medical oxygen to Sri Lanka to help the island nation combat the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“Lifeline from India to Sri Lanka close to 150 tonnes of oxygen from Vizag and Chennai reached the shores of Colombo,” read one of the tweets of the Indian High Commission in Colombo.

India has been sending urgent supplies of oxygen since mid-August to Sri Lanka following a personal request for assistance by the Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa.

On 22 August 2021, the Indian Navy’s INS Shakti delivered 100 tons of Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO) to Colombo, supporting Sri Lanka’s fight against COVID19.

Consolidating the spirit of goodwill in bilateral maritime relations between India and Sri Lanka, the Commander of the Sri Lankan Navy made a personal call to Chief of Naval Staff of India Vice Admiral Karambir Singh for possible support in this regard.

Further, India also extended the assistance of approx. 40 tons of medical-grade oxygen, which Sri Lanka Naval Ship (SLNS) Shakthi on-boarded from Trincomalee harbor port of Chennai, Indian on 17th August 2021. The Sri Lankan naval ship arrived at the port of Colombo at midnight on 22nd August 2021.

COVID assistance to Thailand

On 03 Sep 2021, the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Airavat delivered 300 oxygen concentrators based on the requirement projected by the Government of Thailand to fight COVID-19.

INS Airavat has been delivering COVID relief to friendly foreign nations in South East Asia under the aegis of Mission SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) initiated by the Govt. of India.

COVID assistance to Bangladesh

On 02 September 2021, the Indian Navy’s Offshore Patrol Vessel INS Savitri delivered two 960 LPM (Litres Per Minute) Medical Oxygen Plants (MOP) to Chattogram harbor, Bangladesh. The MOPs were developed and manufactured by DRDO in India.

INS Savitri departed Visakhapatnam on 30 August 2021 to Chittagong, Bangladesh to support the ongoing efforts of the Bangladesh military and government agencies.

COVID assistance to Vietnam

On 30 August 2021, Indian Naval Ship (INS) Airavat arrived at Ho Chi Minh City Port in Vietnam carrying 100 Metric Tons of Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO) in 05 ISO Containers and 300 Oxygen Concentrators of 10 LPM capacity.

Navy extends COVID-19 assistance to Indonesia

On 24th August, INS Airavat arrived at Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta, Indonesia, and disembarked 10 Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO) containers, based on the requirement projected by the Government of Indonesia.

Earlier on 24 July 2021, the ship trans-shipped medical aid which comprised 05 Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO) containers (100 MT) and 300 Oxygen Concentrators to Indonesia.
