India and Bangladesh will hold their bi-annual Director General-level border talks in New Delhi from June 8 to 11, marking the first such meeting since the BNP-led government assumed office in Dhaka earlier this year. The Bangladesh delegation will be led by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General Maj Gen Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, while the Indian side will be headed by Border Security Force (BSF) Director General Praveen Kumar. According to officials in both countries, border fencing, illegal migration, cross-border crimes and alleged border killings are expected to dominate the discussions. India is expected to seek stronger action against illegal crossings, attacks on BSF personnel, smuggling networks and activities of Indian insurgent groups operating from across the border, while Bangladesh is likely to raise concerns over the alleged deaths of its nationals along the border. The two sides are also expected to discuss drug and arms trafficking, human trafficking, preservation of border rivers, water-sharing issues, border infrastructure and emerging security concerns such as drone intrusions. The meeting comes amid signs of improving bilateral engagement following Bangladesh’s February 2026 elections and Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman’s visit to India in April. Officials say both countries are also preparing to resume discussions on trade, shipping, consular affairs and water resources cooperation. India and Bangladesh share a 4,096-km border, of which around 860 km remains unfenced due to geographical constraints. The DG-level border talks, held alternately in New Delhi and Dhaka since 1993, serve as the principal mechanism for reviewing border management and security cooperation between the two neighbours. A joint record of discussions is expected to be signed at the conclusion of the four-day meeting on June 11.
