Countries across the world are trying to reduce the usage of single-use plastic. Several people have started to use cloth bags and paper bags when they go shopping. Many shops are also switching to non-plastic packaging items.
Norwegian diplomat Erik Solheim posted a picture of an ice-cream cup made of a banana leaf on Twitter. A scoop of strawberry ice cream was served in the banana leaf cup. A spoon made of bamboo stick is also there in the picture.
“Green inspiration! This picture from India of ice-cream served in a banana leaf cup shows that we really don’t need plastic as much as we think we do,” Solheim wrote while posting the picture.
The picture was posted by Initiative United North-East on Facebook in September last year.
Solheim’s tweet has collected more than 3,100 likes. Netizens shared how banana leaves are used to serve all types of food and not just ice creams.
One user said, “Have seen this in some other places, even in cities like Mumbai where some places serve icecream on a leaf, kept on a steel plate, and parcel it in leaves.” Another wrote, “You don’t really need plates or forks to have a meal.”
A third user said, “It’s so eco-friendly … This is followed since forever .. Eating on banana leaves or Pattal Done (plate n bowl made of leaves) … The plastic n cutlery use is Western effect .. But we will get back to our roots and nature-friendly ways..” Yet another added, “One more example kulhad wali chai.”
