Deadly storm ‘Cyclone Mocha’ has hit Bangladesh and Myanmar coasts, and is causing devastation in the region. However, West Bengal was spared from the havoc of cyclone in the Bay of Bengal. According to the HS, the cyclone hit the Sittwe beach of Myanmar late on Sunday and caused three deaths. Hundreds of houses and trees were uprooted by the wind that blew at a speed of more than 210 km. Due to this, the supply of traffic, electricity etc. has been disrupted.
Light or moderate to fairly widespread rainfall is very likely over Northeast India during next 04 days. Similarly, heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh on 15th and 16th May. Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura may also experience similar weather conditions untill 18th May.

The cyclone has also reached close to Cox’s Bazar beach in Bangladesh. However, the Meteorological Department has said that the cyclone is now turning into a low pressure. Therefore, there will not be much loss of life and property in Bangladesh.
Due to the impact of the cyclone, it has been raining since night with strong wind in the coastal areas of West Bengal- East and West Medinipur, South and North 24 Parganas. Some areas of Kolkata have also received light rain. The people of Bihar and Jharkhand had to face strong thunderstorms late in the night. The department has told that on Monday, the minimum temperature in the capital Kolkata will be 26.1 and the maximum temperature will be around 37 degree Celsius.
Earlier, an official claimed that Disaster Management Force troops are keeping an eye on the coastal resort towns of West Bengal and barring tourists from travelling to the beach on Sunday, as Cyclone Mocha made landfall along the shores of Bangladesh and Myanmar. Personnel from the Disaster Management Force were on high alert in the coastal areas of Digha and Mandarmani in the Purba Medinipur district, as well as Bakkhali and Sundarbans in the South 24 Parganas district.
As the sea became turbulent, seven units of NDRF troops, including divers, were deployed in the Digha-Mandarmani coastal regions, according to the official. Over 100 state disaster management group officials have also been deployed to Bakkhali sea beach in South 24 Parganas district to monitor tourist traffic.
“The weather service predicted that Cyclone Mocha would pass over West Bengal. However, we have taken all necessary precautions in case the path changes. We have relocated people to safe havens in the low-lying coastal areas of Purba Medinipur and South 24 Parganas districts. Adequate relief materials have also been sent to these areas,” according to another official, reported HS.
