Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in several parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh today as cyclonic storm Michaung intensifies. Positioned at 250 kilometres from Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, the cyclone is expected to cross South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam during the forenoon of December 5 as a severe cyclonic storm.
A red alert warning has been issued indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall with winds gusting upto 110 kilometres per hour today in the districts of West Godavari, Dr. Ambedkar Konaseema, Krishna, Bapatla, Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore, Tirupati, Chittoor, Annamayya and YSR Kadapa. With heavy rainfall reported in districts of Nellore and Tirupati, three teams of NDRF teams were deployed to take up rescue and relief operations.
Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh YS Jagan Mohan Reddy held a meeting on cyclone threat and directed district officials to take all possible steps to safeguard lives and property. A holiday has been declared for schools today in the districts of Tirupati, Nellore, Bapatla, Krishna, Guntur, Sri Satya Sai, Srikakulam, and West Godavari as a precautionary measure. Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority has instructed fishermen not to venture into the sea.
