Climate change is happening and is as real as it seems. The recent glacier outburst at Nanda Devi parvat, Uttarakhand has only reminded the fact human beings keep forgetting. However, the cause of the break is yet unknown.
In an online address, Dr. R K Bhandari, Chairman of Forum for Disaster Mitigation at Indian National Academy of Engineering, specified that the speculations being made about the glacier burst is not based on facts. He called out foreign media for their “generic statements without location-specific context”.
The glacier burst that took place in the middle of the day on February 7 at Dhauli Ganga, Rishi Ganga and Alaknanda river had several lives in danger. 6 days to the disaster and the rescue operations are still in progress. As on Thursday, according to the Uttarakhand state police, at least 35 people have lost their lives and around 204 are still missing.
The rescue operation is being carried out at an intense speed by the joint team of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
Stating on the matter, Bhandari said that the government of India, be that the National Disaster Management Act, National Disaster Management Plan, or policy, there is one thing very clear that they stand committed to integrating disaster mitigation with development planning.
Dr. Bhandari said, “Unless we get hold of the data and go to the bottom of the truth, we would never know what really happened.”
