Cleaner mobility & Sustainable transport; UP on its way to become the hub of Flex Fuel

Uttar Pradesh (UP) is emerging as a significant player in the transition towards cleaner mobility and sustainable transport in India. With a focus on promoting the use of flex fuel, the state has the potential to become a hub of flex fuel technology in the country.

Incentives and Measures to Promote EV Adoption

According to the e-vahan portal, UP holds 25% of the total electric vehicles in India, with 3,34,817 EVs as of 14th July 2022. The state has been working towards a cleaner and sustainable future by adopting electric vehicles and taking measures to promote their use. The government offers incentives such as a 5% per annum interest subsidy for five years, 100% stamp duty reimbursement to all new units in the EV sector, and exemption from electricity duty for the first ten years.

Growing Trend in Electric Vehicles in UP’s Medium and Heavy Passenger Vehicle Categories

There has been a growing trend towards the adoption of electric vehicles in the Medium and Heavy Passenger Vehicle categories in UP, with the number of electric vehicles operational in this category increasing from 124 in 2018 to 1356 as of the current date. Additionally, there has been a significant increase in the number of electric vehicles registered for the transport of cargo, from 6246 in 2018 to 27,645 as of the current date.

Push for Electric Vehicles in the Public Transportation Sector

Under the FAME India scheme, the Ministry of Heavy Industries has sanctioned 6265 electric buses to be deployed in 65 cities/STUs/State Govt. entities for intra and intercity operations. Cities such as Lucknow, Agra, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Bareilly, Moradabad, Aligarh, and Jhansi in UP are included in the list, indicating a strong push towards the adoption of electric vehicles in the public transportation sector.

Ethanol Production and Its Contribution to the Economy

UP is also leading the way in the production of ethanol, a biofuel made from sugarcane that can be blended with petrol. The state is now the largest ethanol-producing state in India, with 54 distilleries that produced a total of 58 crore liters of ethanol in the 2020-21 fiscal year. By using ethanol in petrol, the state was able to save $75.58 million of India’s forex reserve, providing a significant boost to the economy.

Flex fuel technology allows vehicles to run on a blend of petrol and ethanol, making it a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional petrol-only vehicles. With its significant investment in clean transport solutions and its position as a leading producer of ethanol, UP has the potential to emerge as a hub of flex fuel technology and pave the way for a greener future in India.
