A British teenage girl had left her country to join the Islamic State (IS) in Syria. Now, the British authorities have revoked her citizenship.
Shamima Begum was 15 when she travelled to Syria. Shamima’s mother has dual citizenship of Britain and Bangladesh.
British Home Secretary Sajid Javid revoked Shamima’s citizenship on Tuesday.
Shamima Begum, who wants to return to Britain, reacted by saying that the British government’s action was hard to swallow. She recently became a mother to a baby boy. She said depriving her of British citizenship is unjust for her son.
Britain’s action of depriving citizenship has sparked off a debate. The Home department has clarified that the Home Secretary can deprive a person of their British citizenship, where it would not render the individual stateless.
