Bangladesh: Home Minister Orders Review of All Cases Filed After 5 August 2024

Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has ordered a fresh review of all cases filed after 5 August 2024, following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government, saying the move aims to protect innocent citizens from harassment. Speaking to reporters after a three-hour meeting with heads of departments and law enforcement agencies at the secretariat yesterday the Minister said police had been instructed to re-examine the lawsuits and submit a report to the government.  He warned that action would also be taken against police personnel, if they were found involved in harassment. Addressing law and order issues, Mr Ahmed said highways could not be blocked to press demands and grievances must be pursued through lawful means. Responding to remarks by President Mohammed Shahabuddin, the Home Minister said everyone had the right to express views and assured that constitutional rights of all citizens would be upheld.
