Bangladesh extends COVID lockdown till June 6

The government of Bangladesh has further extended the ongoing COVID 19 lockdown in the country by one more week till June 6.

The notification for the extension was issued by the Cabinet Division on Sunday.

Bangladesh declared a countrywide lockdown on April 5 which has been extended several times since then. The last lockdown extension was coming to an end on Sunday, 30 May. Even though the spread of Corona in Bangladesh has remained under control, the government is taking measures  to prevent the spread of the virus in the country.

Northwestern district of Chapainawabganj declared a 7-day long strict lockdown on 24 May after a sudden spurt in positivity rate going over 50 percent which subsequently declined to about 35 percent. The country has also detected 13 cases of B.1.617.2 variant of Coronavirus which was first reported in India. Detection of newer strains in the border districts has caused concern among the health experts in Bangladesh.

Under the current restrictions, public transport including buses, trains and ferries has been allowed to operate at 50 percent passenger capacity. Shops, malls and factories are open with health directives in place.  Restaurants and eateries are also operational by allowing only 50 percent of seats to be occupied. Banks are also open on a limited scale  in the country.

Bangladesh reported 34 deaths and 1444 new Corona cases in the country on Sunday . The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported that sample positivity rate stood at 10.11 percent and recovery rate at 92.48 percent.
