Army has been deployed for relief and rescue operations as the flood situation in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts of Bangladesh deteriorated sharply on Friday. The District Administration has sought the support of the Navy for relief operations in the district in view of the worsening flood situation, reports the official news agency BSS. Sylhet city, its 20 upazilas and two municipalities have been flooded due to continuous rain in the catchment area.
The army officials have said that relief and rescue operations have been started in 3 upazilas of Sylhet and 5 upazilas of Sunamganj. It is rescuing people caught in the flood with the help of boats.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has suspended activities at the Osmani International Airport in Sylhet for three days as water reached near the landing area.
Electricity supply is also likely to be affected as water has entered the Kumargaon power plant in Sylhet.
The Flood Forecast and Warning Centre (FFWC) predicted on Friday that the flood situation in Sylhet, Sunamganj and Netrakona districts may further deteriorate in the next 24 hours. Rivers are flowing above the danger mark at 13 points across the country.
