Covid-19 cases have started to surge again. As a result, the places witnessing the sudden spike in cases like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh have already reinforced partial lockdown in various places. Meanwhile, every other day, a new name gets added to the list of places locked for the public to curb the reappearing spread of the coronavirus cases in the country.
Sikkim is the latest state to impose night curfew after 10 PM. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh together account 80.63% of the daily new cases.
In the last 24 hours, 39,726 new daily cases were reported in the country. During his discussion with the chief ministers of various states, PM Narendra Modi warned if we don’t stop the pandemic in its tracks, the situation can lead to a country-wide outbreak and a second peak of the virus.
Reasons for return of lockdown in the country:
The failure of local administration and governance: At many places, it has been noticed that the local administration is not showing seriousness on the issue of masks. PM Modi pointed out that it is necessary now that the difficulties in governance at the local level should be looked into, reviewed and resolved.
Slowing down of tests: Tests have slowed down in some places in the country. At those places, vaccination too has slowed down. In states like Kerala, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and UP, overemphasis is being given on rapid antigen testing.
Fast spread of the virus due to lifting up travel restrictions: Most of the travel restrictions in the country have been lifted. Old trains are coming back on track. International flights too have restarted. The number of people coming from abroad has suddenly increased.
New strains of the virus: New strains of the virus have been detected in various parts of the globe, like the UK, South Africa. As a result, due to international travels, and the absence of a mechanism that checks and identifies the strains, the virus is spreading.
PM Narendra Modi too spoke on the matter, “ It is equally important to send genome samples for testing so as to detect the variant of the virus in your states.”
Wastage of vaccine: It has also been reported that vaccines are getting wasted.
Whatever shortcomings of planning and governance at the local level, they should be rectified immediately. We should do everything to prevent this vaccine wastage and I would like states to start working with the target of zero wastage.
According to official data, four states and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir have reported wastage above the national mark of 6.5 per cent: Telangana (17.6 per cent), Andhra Pradesh (11.6 per cent), Uttar Pradesh (9.4 per cent), Karnataka (6.9 per cent) and J&K (6.6 per cent).
Places under lockdown:
Maharashtra: Nagpur (night curfew- March 15 to 21)
Gujarat: Night curfew in Ahmedabad from 9 PM to 6 AM from today. Malls and cinema halls will also remain closed on Saturday and Sunday. Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot will also impose night curfew.
Madhya Pradesh: Night curfew in Bhopal, Indore.
Punjab: Night curfew in Ludhiana, Punjab from 9 PM to 5 AM. Other districts like Jalandhar, Patiala, Mohali, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, and Ropar will also observe night curfew from 9 PM to 5 AM.
Sikkim too has imposed night curfew from 10:30 PM till 6 AM.
Status of vaccination in the country:
A total of 3,93,39,817 doses of vaccines have been administered in the country so far. 3,24,26,230 people have been administered the first dose while 69,13,587 people have received both the doses of covid-19 vaccines in India.
In the last 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 3,70,574 second dose of the vaccine has been administered.
In India’s capital Delhi, CM Arvind Kejriwal has said that the vaccination capacity in Delhi will be ramped up from about 40,000 per day to 1.25 lakh daily.
