Akshaya Patra Foundation embarked into history by serving the third billionth meal to the school children. The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi served the meals to the school children at an event organized to mark the occasion in Vrindavan. He interacted with the children during the event.
Akshaya Patra Foundation, the Bengaluru-based NGO, which was founded in 2000, serves lunch to over 1.8 million children in approximately 15000 schools in 12 states in India.
Modi released a plaque to mark the occasion of “third billionth meal” by the Foundation.
Speaking to the media about the programme at Vrindavan, Naveena Neerada Dasa, the head of strategic communications in ISKCON, said, “Arrangements have been made for over 10000 people, including parents, teachers of schoolchildren, donors and other well-wishers of the foundation, and arrangements have been made for them.”

Narendra Modi said many schemes and projects had been taken up by the present Government in the last four and a half years for the benefit of children especially for the school children in giving them nourished food and also vaccination and medical programmes that has helped in not only improving the health of the children but also ensured the school children do not discontinue the education.

He said that countries with fewer facilities were ahead of India in these fields.
“To end this situation, we since 2014 have been working with new strategies in the field of vaccination, cleanliness and child nourishment and decided to conduct these on a mission mode.”
Speaking about the Mission Indradhanush vaccination programme, he said over 3 crore 40 lakh children and 90 lakh mothers had been vaccinated since the launch of the scheme.

The concept of serving of food in schools — midday meal — was an old concept, he said.
“We are ensuring that children get enough clean and nutritious food,” he said
