Read on to know the legend associated with this vrat dedicated to Lord Ganesha, who is hailed as Vighnaharta (remover of obstacles),

Adhik Maas Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat Katha

The Adhik Maas Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat Katha dates back to the times of Satyuga. And the legend of this significant vrat was narrated to Draupadi, the Pandava queen by Maharshi Ved Vyasa (the author of the Mahabharata). Once, the sage, who also happened to be the guardian of the Kuru dynasty, visited the humble abode of the Pandavas when they were in exile. And Draupadi, who was earlier disrobed by Dushasana (only to be saved by Lord Krishna) and humiliated by Duryodhana, wonders what sin she had committed to deserve such treatment. And to answer her question, the Maharshi started telling the story of king Chandrasena and his queen Ratnavali.

According to the story, Chandrasena and Ratnavali had to seek shelter in a forest after enemies looted and plundered their kingdom. The royal couple that once lived a luxurious life had to wander in the woods for food and shelter. One day, they unknowingly entered Markandeya Rishi’s hermitage in search of water. And after learning about the place that they had accidentally visited, the king sought the blessings of the sage and narrated his ordeal. However, like Draupadi, he wondered if he had committed sins to endure such hardships. Hence, to help him find answers to his question, Markandeya Rishi reminded Chandrasena about his deeds during his previous birth.

During his previous birth, Chandrasena, went to a forest to hunt. There, he came across a few Nag Kanyas (serpent women) dressed in red. As he lay his eyes on them, he wanted to know what they were doing on the banks of the lake. The Nag Kanyas then told him that they were observing the Adhik Maas Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat that helps them in getting rid of all their problems. Inspired by the Nag Kanyas, the king decided to observe the vrat. However, after winning the name, fame and power, the king no longer remained grateful to God. He had turned arrogant and unjust. Subsequently, he had an untimely death.

Therefore, he took birth into a royal household once again to reap the benefits and endure the curse of his misdeeds during his previous birth. Thus, after learning about it, Chandrasena realised the blunder he had committed, and he vowed not to commit such a mistake ever again. He observed a vrat along with Ratnavali on the day of Chaturthi, Krishna Paksha, Adhik Maas wholeheartedly. And his devotion and faith worked wonders, and he got his lost kingdom and glory back.

Eventually, Draupadi got her answers, and so did the Pandavas, who endured hardships, lost all their belongings and their kingdom. The Karma of a person plays a pivotal role in determining the quality of his/her life. Hence, this Katha reminds people to introspect and encourages people to good deeds.
