AAP Leader Syed Asad Abbas shook and stirred too much for himself.

During the lockdown, Rekha Sharma, chairperson of the National Commission for Women, drew attention to the disturbing increase in violence against women. Even as the period of lockdown in India came to be extended, increase in domestic violence continued to be reported from India and across the world.

It has become quite evident of the continued ideological and social conditioning in our society, which sanctions patriarchal norms of subordination and subjugation in the privacy of a home or even in the eye of the public. Nevertheless, while there is sufficient information in the public domain to push for wider public discussion on the subject, there is the need to understand how deep rooted this mentality runs. Clearly, the form, nature and extent of spread of violence against women in our society are on a scale, that it may be difficult to find amongst us women who are not survivors. These statics is a shameful one. Hence the importance to develop a multi- layered approach.

Just the day before, a renowned TV channel was holding a debate on the 24th of July 2020 discussing the rejection of the petition by Allahabad High Court filed by Congress supporter Saket Gokhale. Gokhale had in his petition seeking a stay on the ‘Bhumi Pujan’ ceremony of Ram Mandir at Ayodhya on August 5 saying that during the Coronavirus pandemic, it would be a violation of ‘Unlock 2’ guidelines. On Friday, the Allahabad High Court quashed the plea filed by Congress supporter Saket Gokhale observing that the entire petition was filed on the basis of assumptions.

While debating the issue, Dr Syed Asad Abbas, who is an Aam Aadmi Party leader; but is touted as a ‘political analyst’ on television lost his cool and resorted to hurling sexist abuses at BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

Further, when Nupur Sharma, BJP spokesperson countered him on his comment “Ram Naam Japna Paraya Maal Apna”, Dr Abbas lost all semblance of decency and started hurling abuses. He further said that people like Nupur Sharma were “nothing other than Rakhi Sawant of Prime Time”. As if that was not enough, Dr Abbas went on to tell Nupur Sharma, “Aunty ji, go join an Ekta Kapoor serial” and then, proceeded to call her an “Ekta Kapoor Vamp”.

What this phase of the pandemic and this incident tells us is that, a different, more inclusive understanding, which recognises diverse forms of the ‘violence,’ against women are required today. Policy and governance need to be more sensitive towards the need to build a healthy and sound emotional quotient in the community to prevent any kind of violence against women.

It would not be a bad idea to scrap a few irrelevant topics from the school books and replace them with some pertinent ones, because the change has to be made at grassroot levels. A woman’s constitutional rights need to be taught to girls when they are young. This will ensure that the recognize and deal with such brevity in any walk of their lives. An end to everyday forms of publicly inflicted social violence is perhaps the first step towards enabling women to confront violence in their habitat. This may help the individual woman to negotiate her own life on a materially stronger plank to contribute towards nurturing such spaces as havens of love, peace and quietude.

Violence against women is an indicator of the depth of societal conflict and crisis in present times. I for one will stand up to my own demons and #SupportNupurSharma.
