President Droupadi Murmu has stressed the need to initiate a people’s movement to achieve the goals of water conservation, improved management, development, and distribution. Inaugurating the 8th India Water Week at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi today, the President emphasised the importance of united efforts to tackle the pressing issue of water conservation and sustainability. She noted there are many ancient practices in the country on water resources management that are still relevant, and they should be applied in their modern form.
President Murmu highlighted that ancient Indian scriptures have mentioned water conservation thousands of years ago. She said, Amrit Sarovars were constructed, and many water bodies were revived during Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
The President spoke about the transformative impact of the Jal Jeevan Mission, which has significantly improved equitable water distribution across the country. She said, the mission has ensured access to clean water for all and expressed happiness that 78 percent of rural areas have already been provided with water connections, marking a remarkable achievement in the journey towards water accessibility.
In his address, Minister for Jal Shakti C R Patil called upon participants to tackle the water crisis through stronger cooperation, partnerships, and progressive solutions. He informed that more than 15 crore rural households have been provided tap water connections till now.
During the four-day event, around four thousand delegates, including two hundred foreign delegates from 40 countries, will participate, and more than one hundred exhibitors and startups will showcase their ideas in the water sector during the exhibition.
