Quality Control Orders (QCOs) for critical products impacting consumer safety including electrical accessories, laboratory glassware, hinges, copper products, and door fittings have been notified by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). The Commerce and Industry Ministry said that the government is working in mission mode to develop a robust quality ecosystem in India. In a release, the Ministry said that the QCOs have the right ingredients for strengthening the quality standards of ‘Made in India’ products, without compromising on the range of goods being made available to the Indian consumer. The Ministry further added that to establish India as a global leader in providing superior quality and safety-compliant products, a plethora of reforms have been undertaken. There is an unprecedented policy focus on the implementation of Quality Control Orders (QCOs) to enforce strong quality standards. It said the measure is in line with the provisions of the Technical Barriers to Trade Agreement of the World Trade Organisation.
QCOs aim to enhance the credibility and value of Indian products while promoting homegrown brands and minimizing inefficiency of any nature.
