The government on Monday appointed Vinay Mohan Kwatra a career diplomat with 32 years of wide experience as India’s next Foreign Secretary succeeding incumbent Harsh Vardhan Shringla.
A 1988 batch IFS officer, Kwatra is currently serving as India’s Ambassador to Nepal. According to the order issued by the government, Kwatra will be taking over the new charge upon the superannuation of Harsh Vardhan Shringla later this month.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved appointment of Vinay Mohan Kwatra (IFS: 1988), Ambassador in Kathmandu to the post of Foreign Secretary upon superannuation of Harsh Vardhan Shringla (IFS: 1984) on 30.04.2022,” the government in its order stated.

– Vinay Mohan Kwatra was born in the year 1965.
– Over the course of his 32 years long service, Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra had held various coveted positions.
– According to the data available with the Ministry of External Affairs, after joining the Foreign Services in 1988, Kwatra served as Third Secretary and then Second Secretary in the Permanent Mission of India in Geneva until 1993, where apart from learning French language, he handled work relating to the UN specialized agencies, as also the Human Rights Commission. During this period, he also obtained a diploma in International Relations from the Graduate Schools of International Studies in Geneva.
– From 2003 until 2006, he was appointed at the Indian Embassy in Beijing, China, first as a Counsellor and then as the Deputy Chief of Mission.
– Kwatra also represented India as the head of the Trade, Economy, and Finance Bureau at the SAARC Secretariat in Nepal from 2006 until 2010.
– Prior to serving as the head of Americas Division in the Foreign Ministry (between July 2013- October 2015), dealing with India’s relations with the United States and Canada, Kwatra also chaired the Policy Planning & Research Division of the Ministry.
– He also served as Joint Secretary in the office of Prime Minister of India (October 2015- August 2017)
– Prior to assume the charge as India’s Ambassador to Nepal in March 2020, Kwatra previously served as India’s Ambassador to France (August 2017- February 2020).
