Delhi: Attorney General K K Venugopal moved Supreme Court by filing contempt petition against Activist Advocate Prashant Bhushan for committing Contempt of Court by insinuating that the government had fabricated the high-powered committee’s decision to authenticate M Nageswara Rao’s appointment as Interim CBI Director.
AG added that, “If minutes of the meeting were to be fabricated, members of the HPC who constituted majority would have to be parties to such fabrication, as their signatures are contained on the very same page on which the decision is recorded in the minutes. The allegation, then, is directly against a sitting judge of the Supreme Court. This is wholly impermissible and constitutes gross and deliberate contempt of SC”.
He also said that Bhushan was doing all these only to gain publicity.
Referring Venugopal’s petition, the Central government also files a contempt petition against Bhushan and it alleges that Bhushan’s statements are intended and calculated to obstruct justice and interfere with the course of judicial proceeding.
The petition states that since the Attorney General has himself filed a contempt petition against Bhushan on the same subject matter, the question of seeking AG’s consent for filing the present petition will not arise.
